IADT, Sacramento President Patricia A. Hoffman Honors James C. Shelby for His 16 Years of Service as Sacramento's Most Prominent Civic Leader
October 15, 2009
Sacramento, CA. (October 15, 2009) – On Thursday, the Sacramento community united in a celebration of appreciation and style to honor Sacramento’s newest retiree, the Honorable James C. Shelby. Mr. Shelby’s extensive record as one of the region’s most prominent civic leaders, including 16 years as President & CEO of the Greater Sacramento Urban League, warranted a community-wide tribute worthy of such an outstanding career.
IADT, Sacramento President Patricia A. Hoffman was invited to the event as a special guest presenter. On behalf of IADT, Sacramento she congratulated Mr. Shelby on his retirement and thanked him for his service to the community through the Urban League. Through his leadership, thousands have entered local colleges, joined the workforce and purchased their first homes.
President Hoffman also highlighted the Urban League’s "Project SUCCESS," a GED preparation course that has produced over 2,100 graduates. She talked about the importance of education and how IADT’s and the League’s educational visions are aligned. Because the Urban League has trained thousands of youth and adults for a wide variety of jobs, given computer skills training and placed thousands of people in jobs, President Hoffman further acknowledged Mr. Shelby’s commitment to the community by presenting him with a framed letter from IADT.
The event also featured poetry by poet Terry Moore, tributes from a star roster of community leaders, a video slideshow, great food, a spectacular venue, and a local celebrity men’s fashion show from which Mr. Shelby’s next "career look" was chosen by the audience. Generously provided by Macy’s West, the venue and men’s fashion show were highlights of the evening.
