IMAGINE 2009: Student Fashion Show in Detroit

April 17, 2009

Students from the International Academy of Design & Technology to feature fashionable designs on the runway on April 25.

TROY, Mich. (April 17, 2009) – The International Academy of Design & Technology (the Academy) in Troy will be presenting innovative fashion trends at IMAGINE 2009. As the Academy’s 5th annual fashion show, IMAGINE 2009 is a collaboration of several design programs and features a full technical production along with creations from more than 30 fashion design students.

The show will take place at the Masonic Temple’s Crystal Ballroom in Detroit at 8 p.m. and the doors open at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Academy (1850 Research Drive, Troy). Tickets are $20 for reserved seating, $10 for general admission.

All featured designs will fall within the categories of Sportswear, After 5/ Special Occasion, Red Dress (associated with American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women), Wearable Art, and “Green” Design (using organic fabrics or recycled materials). Each designer presented a rendered sketch and fabric selections in early January to earn consideration for entry in the show. Students then had to complete the construction of the garments by late-March and be judged by industry professionals for final acceptance into the show. Original patterns were submitted for inspection with each completed garment design.

Local fashion writer Susan Howes returned this year to help judge the entries. Other judges include Dottie Popp of Peggendott Design Studio, Marlaina Stone of Marlaina Stone Jewelry, and De’Andre Owens, an Academy graduate and winner of the “Best of Show” award at the Academy’s 2008 fashion show. The Fashion Group International-Detroit will also designate one designer as “Rising Star” at the show.

“The amount of work students put into their runway-ready designs is incredible,” explains Julie Ann Patterson, Program Chair of Fashion Design at the Academy. “The process starts in the fall, and student designers work diligently right up to the week of the industry-juried panel show. This year, we really raised the bar by requiring that all designers have their garments ready for the jury show, with no submittals allowed after the professional critiques. We want our students to experience the exacting standards and high demands of the industry before they graduate.”

IMAGINE 2009 is made possible with help of sponsors including: Kelly/Brady Advertising, Target Direct Marketing, DreamWorld Studios, John Robert Powers Modeling School, as well as the judges, and others contributing to the event.
