Note Taking for ITIt’s probably true that most information technology students enjoy active work, whether it’s diagnosing and repairing computers, setting up email, developing databases, or more. So taking notes in class might not be the part of your degree program that interests you the most.

While you’ll do some hands-on work in your information technology degree program, there are many classes in which you’ll have to listen to your instructor’s lectures. And during those times, you can make the most of class time by taking great notes, which brings you giant steps closer toward studying successfully for your exams.

Try these tips for taking notes in IT classes.

  • Stay busy. Taking notes in class requires attention, and it’s easiest to pay attention if you’re active. Try writing down as much as possible to maintain your focus and optimize your note-taking. If there’s a lull in the lecture, write down your own thoughts and questions about the material.
  • Avoid distractions. If you take notes on a laptop, it can be easy to get distracted by checking your email or browsing the Internet. Make sure you avoid these temptations while you should be taking notes.
  • Take notes by hand. Writing your notes down instead of typing them helps eliminate distractions, but it has several other benefits as well. It can improve the amount of information you retain and make your learning process more active.
  • Use a code. Your notes don’t have to be perfect. After all, notes should be for your own benefit, so make the note-taking process easy for yourself. Start by developing a code or system, whether it includes taking notes in outline form, putting a star next to important concepts, or using abbreviations for common words and terms.
  • Take your own notes. There’s a major difference between taking notes and copying notes. Of course, you should copy down what your instructor writes on the board or includes on PowerPoint slides, but you should make it a rule to go above and beyond the provided information. Besides jotting down any info you think is relevant, include your own ideas, comments, and questions. This helps you to get the help you need before you start studying for your next big test.
  • Rewrite your notes. To study, avoid simply reading your notes. You’ll find it difficult to concentrate since reading notes is a passive study method. Instead, rewrite your notes to absorb them through active learning.
