We enjoy watching and interacting with modern video, audio and Web content that is created for our entertainment. But it requires much technique and talent from digital media production professionals to take this media from a creative idea to an exciting final product.

Learn about some important elements of composition that every digital media professional should learn and practice:

  • Line - A line describes a shape or outline. It can vary in thickness and color and can be used to create texture.
  • Color - Color refers to specific hues. A color wheel show complementary colors arranged opposite of each other to portray the relationships between them.
  • Shape - A shape is a two-dimensional line that has no thickness and is flat. It can be categorized as geometric or organic.
  • Form - A form is three-dimensional and has volume and thickness. The illusion of a form can be implied using lines and shading.
  • Center of interest - The center of interest is the area of a composition that first attracts a viewer’s interest. This area is created by emphasis on lines, color, shapes and forms.
  • Balance - Balance is achieved by creating visual unity among design elements. It can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
  • Harmony and contrast - Harmony, or unity, brings a composition together through the use of similar design elements and units. On the other hand, contrast uses dissimilar design elements to create a visual conflict and emphasize objects in a design.
