Linda Vann, registrar at IADT-Sacramento, shares the five questions students ask her most often – and the answers.
1. Why do I have to take a developmental course?
Effective July 2008, all entering students have been required to take a skills assessment exam as part of our entrance requirement. The results of that exam determine if you are mandated to take any developmental courses.
2. Why do I have to take the developmental courses in my first two terms?
This is the stated policy in our catalog, and as an accredited institution of higher learning, we are required to adhere to our stated policies. You should know that we are expanding the times we offer these to accommodate more students.
3. Why do I have to be approved for a leave of absence (LOA); why can’t I just decide?
As an institution that accepts Title IV funding on your behalf, we must follow the prescribed rules that the Department of Education issues. That means that there must be a specific condition to be granted an LOA, it must be requested in writing, and it may not exceed 180 days in a calendar year. Please see your department chair to request this if needed.
4. Why can’t I just drop a class if I want to?
Your grants, scholarships, and student loans are tied to how many units you are taking. In every case, it changes the amount of funding you are allowed and in some cases, it means you lose all funding for that term. It is our responsibility to advise you on how these decisions affect you personally, and we take that responsibility seriously. Therefore, we will require that you obtain the necessary approvals and meet with financial aid prior to changing your school status.
5. What is the process to get my diploma?
During your final term with us you, will be required to complete exit interviews with academics, student accounts, career services, and financial aid. Once those departments have signed off on your graduate application, it comes to the Registrar’s Office for processing. After you successfully complete your final term, your degree will be conferred and your diploma ordered from a third-party vendor. Providing your financial obligations are met, your diploma will be mailed to you within 90 days of program completion.
