Seven-time Grammy recipient and multi-platinum award-winning artist and producer Dr. Dre recently recorded material at a Las Vegas recording studio with the assistance of six students from the International Academy of Design & Technology (IADT)'s audio production program.
Dr. Dre, who has rapped and produced alongside notable artists such as Eminem, Xzibit, Nate Dogg, Jay-Z, Warren G., Snoop Dogg, had three studios booked and a 10-man team of producers and writers on hand that the students interacted with over seven days of intense recording at Odds On Records & Studios. He was in the studio to record tracks for "Detox," his much-anticipated follow-up to his 1999 release "2001."
The project was overseen by IADT-Las Vegas adjunct instructor Cory Harris (pictured above with Dr. Dre), who as a noted freelance technician on the West Coast is often sought out to oversee and manage recording projects for artists who frequent the Las Vegas and Los Angles recording scene. Harris is also chief recording engineer and in-house producer for boxing champion Floyd Mayweather and his Philthy Rich Records and Recording Studio in Las Vegas.
The students, who were handpicked for this opportunity, worked as interns and runners, assisting the engineering team at Odds On. “They actually thought I was joking when I began calling [about the sessions],” says Harris.
The students performed well, with a few standing out for their abilities. Dr. Dre’s team collected contact information for two of the students and plans to call them next time the rapper is in town. Prior to these sessions, one of the students was hired on full-time by the recording studio (he is still working toward his degree as well).
“This was a great opportunity for me to allow my students to take an inside peek into recording sessions with one of the industry’s greats,” says Harris, who maintains certifications in DigiDesign Pro Tools and is trained and certified in several areas including SIA Smaart, Waves plugins, linear- and non-linear recording platforms, and numerous outboard gears used in most professional recording studios across the nation. “We allowed students to interact with the talent and apply their knowledge to real-life situations.”
