Fashion Trend Analysts: What Do They Do?

In the last few years, a new role has begun to take shape in Fashion Design and Merchandising. Known as fashion trend analysts, or forecasters, these individuals make up a small group of professionals in the fashion industry. The market for forecasters is very small with less than 1,000 jobs available in the United States. But much of the fashion industry depends on them – including designers, retailers, fiber companies, fabric manufacturers and even financial institutions.

But what exactly do fashion trend analysts do?

Fashion trend analysts are responsible for spotting upcoming trends and products. They attempt to project past today’s trends, into the future, to discover what will be hot next season. Their predictions can guide manufactures and designers to use certain materials or focus on certain styles. To predict these trends, forecasters take many elements into consideration. They research past trends and attempt to determine the factors likely to affect upcoming trends. They should be familiar with shopping and the current economic environment. They are required to be familiar with all aspects of media, including movies, music and television. They are also required to travel throughout the world.

These various factors allow analysts to observe how the world is changing. The research is meant to give them insight into the current condition of the world and how people are feeling economically, socially and politically. These global observations allow them to predict where people are interested in going.

Fashion trend analysts can work for forecasting firms. However, there are very few firms dedicated exclusively to this trade – there are only about a dozen throughout the world. Fashion retailers, design houses, manufacturers and even some non-profit organizations hire fashion trend analysts.

Fashion trend analysts should have good reporting, writing, public speaking, and sales skills – as they are required to present their findings to clients and persuade these clients to believe them. A college degree in fashion is highly recommended if not required. Firms also recommend finding an internship with a forecaster, if possible.
