Finding quality image manipulation software for the Mac OS X platform isn't that difficult. After all, there's Adobe Photoshop CS5, Acorn, and Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, to name a few. The only problem with such software is that it's often exorbitantly overpriced. Macware®'s Graphic Design Studio is a far cheaper and far better alternative for many Mac users. It's got most of the functionality of more expensive editors at a fraction of the price. For both amateurs and experts, it's a compelling option.
In terms of features, Graphic Design Studio has all the same basic capabilities of other well-known raster graphics editors. Featuring support for every file format imaginable such as SVG, EPS, BMP, TIFF, GIFF, PDF, JPG, and PNG, it's capable of working with basically any image. It includes full layer support so you can work with image files much as you would in Photoshop. For those who aren't particularly adept with image manipulation software, it also includes over 100 visual effects and filters. On top of that, it features helpful alignment tools and a full user guide and instructional manual.
The features list extends into more complex territory as well. Graphic Design Studio includes Bezier tools, Boolean operations, a Component Library that you can save images to for use later on with other projects, and the ability to create 3D graphics quickly and easily. It also features an advanced knife tool for selectively slicing and dicing images and paths, and a blending tool for smoothing out imperfections within images. Finally, Graphic Design Studio allows users to import and export files in a variety of formats.
While the features included by default with Macware®'s Graphic Design Studio are impressive, the performance of the program is what really ties it all together. It's fast and responsive, thanks to its streamlined code base. Resource usage is lower than with many other image manipulation programs as a result of its light footprint. While Macware® probably won't be stealing away any of Photoshop's customers any time soon, the features of Graphic Design Studio make it a suitable tool for general image editing tasks.
