When Is the Best Time to Shop?

Have you ever been excited about getting an amazing deal on a great pair of shoes, only to be disappointed a week later when you find those same shoes at half price? How can you be sure that you're really getting the best deal next time you're at the mall?

First, it is usually a bad idea to buy an item the first time you see it in stores. It may still be around at a cheaper price a month later. Experts say that clothes fall to their lowest prices between six and eight weeks after they hit stores.

The best time of the week to shop is Thursday evening, when most clothing stores begin restocking for weekend sales. On Thursdays, you'll generally find the best selection and you won't have to fight the weekend crowds. You can also get to the sales racks before they get picked clean of the most popular sizes and styles.

Of course, you can always expect to find great deals on items at the end of a season. Look for winter coats in January, for example, or swimming apparel in August. These are also great times of the year to shop because the fashion shows are held at the beginning of the year, and back-to-school deals come around at summer's end.

As long as you have the patience to sift through long racks of clothes, however, you can oftentimes find the biggest bargains at thrift stores. You can find the best thrift store selections around March or April when people are spring cleaning and getting rid of Christmas gifts that didn't fit. Also, if you live in a college town, you can hit the jackpot at the end of semesters when students are getting rid of their old clothes and furniture before heading home.

If you follow these few simple tips, you could get the best deals possible. Shop smart and you'll stay on fashion's cutting edge without maxing out the credit card.
