Get the Most out of Your Doodles

January 6, 2011 Administrator IADT Detroit 0 Comments

If you are a designer, you need to be a doodler. Many great designers will tell you that they doodle every chance they get. Why? Because doodling is much more than drawing stars, flowers and goofy pictures; it is an important part of the brainstorming process.

Doodle as a form of visual brainstorming. Before you start a project, simply start drawing ideas, and don't stop until you've filled several pages with your sketches. No one will likely frame your doodles, so don't worry about making them pretty; just get them on paper as quickly as possible. You have plenty of good ideas waiting in your head, and you are doing yourself a disservice by not taking enough time to get everything you can onto paper.

Once you have the perfect idea figured out, the best thing you can do is doodle again. Good designers know that they can't stop brainstorming just because they thought of one good idea. Draw plenty of different variations of that idea for new concepts. Seeing your concept on paper is the best way to improve it before actually rendering it on a computer.

Have you ever thought of a great idea for a project only to lose it when you sit down to work on it? Doodling is helpful because you can do it anywhere. Many designers keep a small pad of paper with them all the time. If you sketch an idea right when it pops into your head, you'll never have to worry about losing one again.

Once you have your doodle pad, bring it everywhere you go - even to meetings. While you probably know that doodling can get you through a boring meeting, did you know that it can actually help you remember what was said at that meeting? A recent study by the University of Plymouth showed that people who doodle retain information better than those who don't. Psychologists theorize that the brain power required to doodle is enough to keep the mind from wandering, but not enough to block out everything the speaker says. Buy a small sketch pad and never feel bad about doodling again!
