Lace has been known for centuries to invoke a sense of delicacy and romance in clothing. But through the years, fashion designers have given lace a new voice. Lace can be edgy. When paired with certain fabrics, colors and styles, you can transform lace into a piece of fashion with attitude.
So what does this mean? It means fashion design and merchandising professionals have the difficult task of using traditional fabrics in new ways. Fashion design and merchandising professionals know that people don’t want to see the same clothes on runways year after year. In order to create clothing that will sell, they must come up with nontraditional ways to use fabric, color and cut.
So how exactly do fashion design and merchandising professionals give lace an edge? Just some of the ways include:
- Pairing lace with leather – The contrast in fabrics create a dynamic piece of fashion design.
- Using lace with brightly colored fabrics – Pairing such a delicate fabric with vivid colors can completely transform a piece of clothing. The texture of the lace will add flair to the fashion design.
- Use black lace – Using an nontraditional color of lace can offer fashion design and merchandise professionals the opportunity to create more edgy designs.
- Use lace for accessories – Turning lace into a bracelet, headband or pair of gloves can be a great way to add attitude to an ensemble.
- Use torn lace – While lace is fancy and delicate when it’s in pristine condition, when frayed or torn, lace can have a completely different look.
In fashion design and merchandising courses, students learn the importance of using fabrics and colors in nontraditional ways. To understand current trends and to be able to predict new ones, fashion design and merchandising professionals must be able to utilize pieces of fashion, such as lace, in new ways.
