Paul Vaughn

Name: Paul Vaughn

Title/Position: Program Chair, Web Design & Development, Internet Marketing, and Information Technology

Educational Background:

  • BFA in Graphic Communications - Southwest Texas State University
  • Adobe Certified Expert in Dreamweaver CS6

Professional Experience:

Paul Vaughn started in the field of Graphic Design but quickly transitioned to Web Design in the 1990s as that field exploded on the scene. He has been creating websites though his company Dingus Design for a wide variety of businesses and individuals including manufacturers, artists, photographers, musicians, professional photographic labs, architects and interior designers. Specific clients include the illustrator John Picacio, Fotoseptiembre USA international photography festival, the City of San Antonio, Digital Pro Lab, Alamo Architects and Biga of the Banks. Paul Vaughn also wrote the "Mac Guy" column in the San Antonio Express-News for eight years and continues to blog on tech issues at PaulVaughn.com. He also runs the blog MissionsUnknown.com that features articles and information about SF/Fantasy/Horror creators in San Antonio.

I Got Into This Field Because … I love making cool stuff! I like having my work seen by hundreds, thousands or even millions of people. I love helping people and businesses to create the professional image they are looking for.

What I Love About Teaching Is … I really enjoy working with students and leading them along on their journey of discovery. I love seeing that moment when the light goes on and the student starts to understand core concepts. I love seeing their creativity and being surprised at their solutions to the challenges I present.

My Notable Awards/Achievements Include: I am an Adobe Certified Expert in Dreamweaver CS6. I’m the Chief Technologist for Fotoseptiembre. I have been president of the MacApple Users of San Antonio and the Mahncke Park Neighborhood Association. I’m one of the founders of Missions Unknown. And I’m still known around San Antonio as “The Mac Guy”!

I Got Into This Field Because … Education has always been important in my life prior to working at IADT. I began as an adjunct and realized that being able to share the knowledge I gain throughout my professional as well as personal experience in the classroom has been a privilege.

What I Love About Teaching Is … I enjoy helping others achieve their goals.

One Thing Most People Don't Know About Me Is … I am a bit of a sci-fi geek—and proud of it.

Name: Jennifer Burrell

Title/Position: Program Chair - Retail Merchandise Management and Fashion Design and Merchandising

Educational Background:

  • MBA - American InterContinental University;
  • BA Fashion Management - University of the Incarnate Word

Professional Experience: I am a freelance designer and former owner of a clothing line and online fashion boutique. In addition to sewing the products and drafting patterns, I created advertisements and conducted marketing research for the company. I also designed the company's catalogue and direct-mail pieces. I have had the opportunity to train with a corsetry expert and work as a Visual Merchandiser for Saks Fifth Avenue as well.

What I Teach at IADT: Merchandising Management Externship

I Got Into This Field Because … It is rewarding to share my knowledge with others.

What I Love About Teaching Is … The feeling I get when I know I have helped someone understand a concept for the first time. I also enjoy watching my students' talents evolve.

One Thing Most People Don't Know About Me Is … I like to bake and decorate cakes.

My Notable Awards/Achievements Include:

I Got Into This Field Because … I want to give back to the future artists coming up and coming to our school to give them the best education they can get.

What I Love About Teaching Is … seeing the expression on the students' faces when they finally get it, the light bulb goes off and the smile goes on.

One Thing Most People Don't Know About Me Is … my life is an open book.

What I Teach at IADT: Introduction to Drawing, Digital Imaging and Design Fundamentals

I Got Into This Field Because … It is more rewarding to know that my students can earn a living in graphic design when they graduate as opposed to my former field of fine art, where it is much more challenging to make a living as an artist.

What I Love About Teaching Is … Making connections with people I might have never meet otherwise and knowing that I have the potential to influence their lives in a positive way.

One Thing Most People Don't Know About Me Is … I have been a professional musician for over 20 years.

My Notable Awards/Achievements Include:

  • Artpace Residency in 2002
  • Co-founder of San Anto Cultural Arts
  • Invited to be a part of the San Juan Triennial 2004
  • Artwork purchased by Altoids Curiously Strong Collection 2005
  • Artwork published in 4 books
